Guatemala Medical Mission, March 20–28, 2010!!!

One month and counting!

Our trip is fast approaching!  The Art Show was a tremendous success and very well attended by the St. Peter's family and many from our Conway community and beyond  Thanks to the incredible generosity of the St. Peter's congregation, we are very close to having all of our financing in place.

There are still many ways that you can help.

• We are still collecting old reading glasses to take with us.  Many women of Guatemala earn a living by sewing and creating beautiful textiles and embroidery.  Reading glasses can make a difference in their ability to earn a living.

• We are still collecting shoes - new or gently used.  The Mayan people of Guatemala are very tiny and small sizes of shoes are really needed.  Many children have to go shoeless, or have foot problems from the lack of shoes.

• We are still collecting large, rolling suitcases for packing our medical supplies.
• We are still collecting coloring books and colors for the children who will come to the clinic.
• And of course, we are still taking financial donations, large or small.  This will allow us to more comfortably spend our time in Guatemala without worrying about how we might need to pay for unexpected expenses.

Following the 10:30 service on Sunday, February 21st, we will have a special pre-trip presentation for the congregation to give you a clear idea of where we will be and what we will be doing.  A companion presentation will be done after we return from our trip.

If you would like to sponsor a specific need for us, here is a quick table which details some expenses that we need to finance.

• Our translators – 4 of them – will cost $125 each to cover the entire week.

Remember the Mayan people mostly speak Quiche, not Spanish.

• Our transportation and security for the entire week will cost $2000. This covers everything for the 9 days.

• Some medicines and services are best purchased in Guatemala. This will be $300.

• Each team member will have expenses for meals and lodging totaling $300 for the entire trip. This covers all meals, all lodging, airport taxes, and insurance.

Again, your support has been tremendous and we are deeply grateful!

What region will we be in?
We are heading to the Boca Costa de Solola area in southwestern Guatemala. It is one of the poorest regions in the country with the highest infant and maternal mortality rates in Guatemala.

Where will we be based?

We will be working with the Boca Costa Medical Mission, a series of clinics throughout the Boca Costa de Solola area that pull from about 45 small villages.

Fundraising Efforts

We will bring our own medicines to give so our current fundraising project is called Buck a Bottle. When you’re at the store, purchase a bottle or two of the medicines needed (click here for the list!). Drop the bottles into the basket in the church lobby. And – if possible – rubberband a dollar or two to the bottle!
